Why people come here
Changsha has been continuously settled for around three thousand years, but it's not a museum-piece kind of old — the city runs on television production, tech, and one of the most active night-market food scenes in China, powered by Hunan TV and streaming giant Mango TV, both headquartered here. Most visitors land in Changsha simply because it's the gateway to everywhere else in the province, and then end up staying longer than planned because the food alone is worth it.
By day it's a fairly ordinary big Chinese city of glass towers and wide boulevards; after dark, entire streets turn over to plastic stools, folding tables, and the smell of chili oil.
What to actually do
- Visit Orange Isle (Juzizhou). A long, narrow river island in the middle of the Xiang River, home to a 32-metre carved granite head of the young Mao Zedong, unveiled in 2009 and visible from much of the surrounding riverbank.
- Walk Yuelu Academy. Founded in the 10th century on Yuelu Mountain, it's one of China's oldest academies of higher learning and now sits inside Hunan University's campus — a genuinely calm counterpoint to the city center.
- Eat your way down Ju Zhong Alley or Huogongdian. Two of the best-known night-food strips, built around crawfish, stinky tofu, and skewers, running well past midnight.
- Take the metro to IFS. Changsha's twin-tower International Finance Square anchors the modern skyline, with a rooftop deck view over the city and river.
Changsha genuinely gets going after 9pm. Restaurants that look half-empty at 7 will be standing-room only two hours later — plan dinner accordingly rather than eating early out of habit.
Getting there
Changsha Huanghua International Airport is Hunan's main air gateway, with domestic and a growing number of international connections. Changsha South, one of China's busiest high-speed rail stations, puts Zhangjiajie about 2.5 hours away and Jishou (for Fenghuang) around 2 hours away, making the city the natural hub for a Hunan itinerary.
